1982 WORLD CUP

In Spain, 24 countries competed for the World Cup. The desire of the new FIFA president Joao Havelange to increase the number of participants came true.

Italy, which had announced great things in Argentina by finishing in fourth place, won a third title. After a difficult first round, the Squadra Azzurra got its grove, lead by Paolo Rossi, who scored goals at an incredible pace. Once the Italians got to the final, nothing could stop them.

A World Cup without controversy would not be one. The matchup between Austria and West Germany was a disgrace. Already qualified for the next round, Austria gave the game 1-0 to the Germans who secured a place to the second round which angered and disappointed Algeria.

The semi-final game between France and West Germany was a classic, full of surprises. A serious incident had an impact on the outcome of the game. At the end of regular time, Patrick Battiston was injured after a vicious charge by the German goalkeeper. No fault was called, even if the goalkeeper should have been ejected. Battiston left on a stretcher.

Michel Hidalgo, the French coach, was forced to make his second substitution, since Battiston also entered the game as one. The game went into overtime and Hidalgo could not make any other substitution. In overtime, France took a 3-1 lead, but the Germans, who always seemed to be more dangerous when they fall behind, equalized. Finally West Germany won the game on penalty kicks, the first time the outcome of World Cup game was decided that way.
